How to Stop the Bleeding on a Dog’s Toenail?

Keep the dog calm and still

Apply direct pressure with clean gauze or a cloth for 5 to 10 minutes without checking constantly

If available, use styptic powder on the bleeding nail tip

If styptic powder is not available, use cornstarch or flour

Hold the paw elevated while maintaining pressure

Wrap the paw lightly with gauze if needed to keep pressure in place

If bleeding continues, reapply styptic powder and pressure

Keep the dog from licking or walking on the paw

Contact a veterinarian if bleeding does not stop after 10 to 15 minutes

Seek veterinary care right away if the nail is torn, hanging, or the bleeding is heavy

Watch for signs of pain, swelling, or infection afterward
