Check the color: look for a mostly golden-yellow shell
Smell the base: a sweet pineapple scent usually means it is ripe
Press gently: it should give slightly, not feel hard or mushy
Pull a leaf from the crown: if it comes out easily, it may be ripe
Check the weight: a ripe pineapple feels heavy for its size
Look at the eyes: they should be flat and fairly even
Avoid green fruit with no smell if you want it fully ripe
Avoid fruit with soft spots, mold, or a fermented smell
