How to Test for STI?

Choose the right test based on your sex, symptoms, and exposure

Get tested at a clinic, doctor’s office, sexual health center, or lab

Provide a urine sample if requested

Give a blood sample if requested

Swab the vagina, cervix, penis, throat, rectum, or sores if requested

Test for chlamydia and gonorrhea with urine or swab tests

Test for HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis with blood tests

Test for trichomoniasis with urine or swab tests

Test for herpes with a swab of a sore or a blood test if appropriate

Test for HPV through cervical screening if recommended

Follow the timing window after exposure before testing

Repeat testing if the first test was done too early

Avoid sex until results are back if you have symptoms or a recent exposure

Get retested after treatment if advised

Test regularly if you have new or multiple partners
