How to Texture Sheetrock?

Clean the wall surface and remove dust, grease, and loose material

Repair holes, cracks, and dents with joint compound

Sand patched areas smooth and wipe away dust

Protect floors, trim, outlets, and nearby surfaces with plastic and painter’s tape

Apply a primer if needed for better adhesion and even absorption

Choose a texture method such as knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, slap brush, or roll-on texture

Mix the texture compound to the manufacturer’s recommended consistency

Load the texture tool, sprayer, roller, brush, or knife with the compound

Apply the texture evenly across the sheetrock in sections

Build the texture gradually until the desired pattern is reached

Let the texture set for the proper amount of time

Flatten or modify the texture if using a knockdown or similar finish

Allow the textured surface to dry completely

Lightly sand any rough spots if needed

Prime the textured wall before painting

Paint the finished surface with the desired topcoat
