Sign the title on the seller section exactly as shown on the title
Fill in the buyer’s name and address on the title
Record the odometer reading if required
Complete a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability with the California DMV
Give the buyer the signed title
Give the buyer a bill of sale if available
Remove your license plates unless the plates are transferable under the specific situation
Provide a smog certificate if required
Buyer completes the title transfer application with the California DMV
Buyer pays the title transfer fee and any use tax
Buyer registers the vehicle and gets new registration if needed
Submit the transfer within 10 days of the sale
Keep copies of all signed documents for your records
