Remove the person from the heat source
Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, belts, and tight clothing near the burn
Do not use ice, butter, oils, or toothpaste
Do not pop blisters
Cover the burn loosely with a clean, nonstick sterile dressing or cling film
Keep the burned area elevated if possible
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed and safe to use
Seek urgent medical help if the burn is large, deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint
Seek urgent medical help if the skin is white, charred, or leathery
Seek urgent medical help if there are signs of infection, severe pain, or the person feels unwell
Call emergency services if the burn is severe or the person has trouble breathing or is in shock
