Remove the person from the source of the chemical
Protect yourself with gloves if possible
Brush off any dry chemical before rinsing if it is safe to do so
Remove contaminated clothing, shoes, and jewelry
Rinse the affected area with cool running water for at least 20 minutes
Keep rinsing longer if the chemical is still on the skin
Do not use ice, ointments, or creams
Do not try to neutralize the chemical with another substance
Cover the burn loosely with a clean, dry, nonstick dressing
Seek emergency medical help for large burns, deep burns, eye burns, inhaled chemicals, or severe pain
Call poison control for chemical-specific advice
Get urgent medical care if blisters, swelling, trouble breathing, or worsening symptoms occur
