Rest the foot and avoid activities that cause pain
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours
Use compression with an elastic bandage or wrap
Elevate the foot above heart level when possible
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you
Wear supportive footwear or a brace if recommended
Avoid putting weight on the foot if it worsens pain
Begin gentle movement and stretching only after pain and swelling start to improve
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is major, or symptoms do not improve
Get urgent care if there is deformity, numbness, or worsening bruising or swelling
