How to Treat a Sprained Foot?

Rest the foot and avoid activities that cause pain

Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time every 2–3 hours for the first 48 hours

Use compression with an elastic bandage or wrap

Elevate the foot above heart level when possible

Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you

Wear supportive footwear or a brace if recommended

Avoid putting weight on the foot if it worsens pain

Begin gentle movement and stretching only after pain and swelling start to improve

Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is severe, swelling is major, or symptoms do not improve

Get urgent care if there is deformity, numbness, or worsening bruising or swelling
