Keep the area clean and dry

Do not squeeze, pop, or prick it
Use an antiseptic wash if advised by a doctor
Apply a prescribed antibiotic ointment if recommended
Take pain relief medicine if needed and safe for you
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage if it is draining
Wash hands before and after touching the area
Wear loose, breathable clothing to reduce friction
See a doctor if it is large, very painful, recurrent, or not improving
Seek urgent care if you have fever, spreading redness, severe swelling, or pus with worsening pain
