Wash your hands before touching the blister
Clean the area gently with soap and water
Leave the blister intact if possible
Cover it with a clean, dry bandage or blister pad
Use a cushioned dressing to reduce pressure and friction
Wear roomy, comfortable shoes and moisture-wicking socks
Avoid activities that rub or irritate the blister
If the blister is large, painful, or likely to burst, drain it with a sterilized needle
Clean the blister with antiseptic before and after draining
Leave the skin over the blister in place after draining
Apply antibiotic ointment if needed
Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet or dirty
Keep the area clean and dry
Do not peel off the skin unless it is dead and loose
Seek medical care if there are signs of infection
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
Seek medical care if the blister is caused by a burn, chemical exposure, or severe injury
