Blow your nose gently
Use saline nasal spray
Use a saline rinse (neti pot or squeeze bottle) with sterile/distilled or previously boiled and cooled water
Take a steamy shower or inhale steam from a bowl of hot water
Use a humidifier in your room
Drink warm fluids to loosen mucus
Apply a warm compress to your face and around your nose
Try gentle nasal irrigation with saline as needed
Use a decongestant nasal spray (oxymetazoline or similar) for up to 3 days
Consider an oral decongestant if safe for you (follow label directions)
Use an antihistamine if congestion is allergy-related (follow label directions)
Consider an intranasal steroid spray for allergy or chronic congestion (use consistently as directed)
Sleep with your head elevated
Stay hydrated
Avoid smoke and strong irritants
If you suspect a cold, rest and continue supportive care
Seek medical care urgently for severe facial pain, high fever, swelling around the eyes, pus-like discharge, trouble breathing, or symptoms lasting more than 10 days without improvement
Seek medical care for recurrent or chronic congestion or frequent sinus infections
