Stop chewing, talking, or yawning widely
Relax your jaw and keep your mouth slightly open
Apply a warm compress to the jaw for 10 to 15 minutes
Gently massage the jaw muscles
Try slow, controlled jaw movements only if they do not increase pain
Avoid hard, chewy, or sticky foods
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you normally can use one
Seek urgent medical care if the jaw is locked, very painful, swollen, or after an injury
