Stop trying to force the jaw open
Apply a warm compress to the jaw for 15 to 20 minutes
Gently massage the jaw muscles
Try slow, small opening and closing movements
Keep the jaw relaxed and avoid clenching
Eat soft foods and avoid wide mouth opening
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if safe for you
Seek urgent medical care if the jaw stays locked, is very painful, or follows an injury
Call emergency services if you have trouble breathing or swallowing
