Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, belts, and tight clothing near the burn
Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick sterile dressing or cling film
Keep the burned area elevated if possible
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Do not apply ice directly to the burn
Do not pop blisters
Do not apply butter, oils, toothpaste, or creams unless advised by a clinician
Seek medical care if the burn is larger than the palm of your hand
Seek medical care if the burn is on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or over a major joint
Seek medical care if there are signs of infection, worsening pain, fever, or pus
Seek emergency care if the burn is caused by chemicals, electricity, or inhalation of smoke
Seek medical care if the person is very young, elderly, or has diabetes or a weakened immune system
