Wash your hands if possible
Apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or gauze
Hold firm pressure continuously for 10 minutes
Elevate the cut above heart level if possible
Add more cloth or gauze if blood soaks through; do not remove the first layer
Keep pressure on until bleeding stops
Clean the cut with running water once bleeding slows
Apply an antiseptic if available
Cover with a clean bandage
Seek medical help if bleeding is heavy, deep, spurting, or does not stop after 10–15 minutes of pressure
