Wash your hands with soap and water
Clean the area around the splinter with soap and water
Sterilize tweezers and a needle with rubbing alcohol
If the splinter tip is visible, grasp it with tweezers and pull it out in the same direction it entered
If the splinter is under the skin, gently use the sterilized needle to lift the skin over the splinter tip
Use tweezers to remove the exposed splinter
If the splinter is deep, soak the area in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes and try again
Rinse the area after removal
Apply antiseptic or antibiotic ointment
Cover with a clean bandage
Seek medical help if the splinter is very deep, near the eye, causing severe pain, or cannot be removed
Seek medical help if there is redness, swelling, pus, or fever after removal
