Check the scene for safety
Tap the person and shout to see if they respond
Call emergency services or have someone else call
Send someone to get an AED if available
Lay the person flat on their back on a firm surface
Open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin
Check for normal breathing for no more than 10 seconds
If not breathing normally, start chest compressions
Place the heel of one hand in the center of the chest
Place the other hand on top and interlock fingers
Keep arms straight and shoulders over your hands
Push hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute
Compress the chest about 2 inches in adults
Allow the chest to fully recoil after each compression
Give 30 chest compressions
Give 2 rescue breaths if trained and willing
Pinch the nose shut and make a seal over the mouth
Give each breath for about 1 second
Watch for the chest to rise
Continue cycles of 30 compressions and 2 breaths
Use the AED as soon as it arrives
Turn on the AED and follow the voice prompts
Attach the pads to the bare chest as shown on the pads
Clear everyone before the AED analyzes or shocks
Resume CPR immediately after the shock or if no shock is advised
Continue until the person starts breathing, help arrives, or you are too exhausted to continue
