Rest the ankle and avoid putting weight on it
Apply ice for 15–20 minutes at a time, several times a day
Use an elastic bandage or compression wrap
Elevate the ankle above heart level
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and safe for you
Use crutches or a brace if walking is painful
Begin gentle range-of-motion exercises when pain and swelling start to improve
Gradually return to activity as strength and balance improve
Wear supportive shoes or an ankle brace during recovery
Seek medical care if you cannot bear weight, have severe swelling, deformity, numbness, or worsening pain
