How to Replace Tub Spout Diverter?

Turn off the water supply to the tub/shower if needed

Place a towel or rag over the drain to catch small parts

Inspect the tub spout to identify the attachment type

Look underneath the spout for a set screw

If there is a set screw, loosen it with the correct Allen wrench

Pull the spout straight off the pipe

If there is no set screw, check whether the spout is threaded

Rotate the spout counterclockwise to remove it from the pipe

Clean the pipe threads and remove old plumber’s tape or debris

Apply new plumber’s tape to the pipe threads if the new spout requires it

Slide or thread the new tub spout onto the pipe

Tighten the set screw if the spout uses one

Make sure the spout is aligned correctly

Turn the water back on

Test the diverter by pulling or lifting it to confirm proper flow to the shower

Check for leaks around the spout and pipe connection
