Remove the old line from the reel
Check the reel for dirt or damage
Open the bail on a spinning reel or prepare the spool on a baitcasting reel
Thread the new line through the rod guides
Tie the line to the spool with an arbor knot or similar knot
Close the bail or secure the line on the spool
Keep light tension on the line while winding
Turn the reel handle to spool the line evenly
Stop before overfilling the spool
Cut the line and secure the tag end
Test the reel for smooth line flow
Trim any excess line if needed
