How to Clean an Open Wound?

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water

Put on clean disposable gloves if available

Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze to stop bleeding

Rinse the wound under clean running water

Remove visible dirt or debris with clean tweezers cleaned with alcohol

Clean the skin around the wound with mild soap and water

Do not put soap directly into the wound

Pat the area dry with clean gauze or a clean towel

Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment if appropriate

Cover the wound with a sterile bandage or dressing

Change the dressing daily or when it becomes wet or dirty

Keep the wound clean and dry

Watch for redness, swelling, pus, worsening pain, or fever

Seek medical care if the wound is deep, large, bleeding heavily, or shows signs of infection
