Rest the affected area
Apply ice packs for 15–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Elevate the area above heart level if possible
Use compression with a bandage if appropriate and not too tight
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if safe for you
Avoid massage or heat in the first 48 hours
Protect the area from further injury
Monitor for increasing pain, swelling, redness, warmth, or fever
Seek medical care if the hematoma is large, worsening, very painful, or not improving
Seek urgent care if it is on the head, causes numbness, weakness, trouble breathing, or follows a serious injury
