Wash the finger gently with soap and warm water
Soak the finger in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day
Keep the finger clean and dry between soaks
Apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment if the skin is broken
Cover with a clean, dry bandage
Change the bandage daily or when wet or dirty
Elevate the hand to reduce swelling
Avoid squeezing, popping, or cutting the infected area
Remove rings or tight jewelry from the hand
Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed and if safe for you
Seek medical care if there is pus, worsening redness, severe pain, fever, red streaks, numbness, or trouble moving the finger
Seek medical care if you have diabetes, poor circulation, or a weakened immune system
Seek urgent care if the infection is near the nail, after a bite or puncture, or not improving within 24 to 48 hours
Follow a clinician’s instructions if antibiotics or drainage are prescribed
