Rinse 1 cup of lentils under cold water
Sort out any debris or small stones
Add the lentils to the Instant Pot
Add 2 to 3 cups of water or broth
Add salt if desired
Close the lid and set the valve to sealing
Cook on high pressure for 6 minutes for brown or green lentils
Cook on high pressure for 9 minutes for black lentils
Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes for red or yellow lentils
Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes
Turn the valve to venting to release any remaining pressure
Open the lid carefully
Drain any excess liquid if needed
Fluff or stir the lentils before serving
