Gather mortar mix, clean water, mixing bucket or mortar box, and a hoe or mixing paddle
Measure the dry mortar mix according to the package instructions
Pour the dry mix into the mixing container
Add about three-quarters of the required water
Mix thoroughly until the mortar starts to come together
Add small amounts of water as needed to reach a workable consistency
Continue mixing until the mortar is smooth and lump-free
Let the mortar rest for a few minutes if recommended by the manufacturer
Remix briefly before use
Use the mortar within the working time specified on the package
