Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
Remove rings, watches, and tight clothing near the burn
Cover the burn with a clean, non-stick sterile dressing or cling film
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen
Keep the burned area elevated if possible
Do not apply ice directly
Do not use butter, toothpaste, oils, or creams on the burn
Do not pop blisters
Seek medical care for large, deep, or severe burns
Seek urgent care for burns on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints
Seek medical care if the burn looks infected, worsens, or does not heal quickly
