Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of oil to a large pot with a lid
Heat the pot over medium heat
Add 2 to 3 popcorn kernels
Cover the pot and wait for the test kernels to pop
Add 1/2 cup popcorn kernels in an even layer
Cover the pot and gently shake it occasionally
Remove from heat briefly if popping slows too much
Keep shaking until popping slows to 2 to 3 seconds between pops
Remove from heat
Transfer the popcorn to a bowl
Add salt or seasoning if desired
