How To Canker Sore?

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon salt in 1 cup warm water) 3–4 times daily

Use an over-the-counter numbing gel or liquid (benzocaine or similar) as directed

Apply a protective paste or film (benzocaine/benzyl alcohol protective products, or carboxymethylcellulose-based products) as directed

Use OTC pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen as directed

Avoid spicy, acidic, salty, or very hot foods and drinks

Use a soft toothbrush and avoid aggressive brushing

Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes

Keep the area clean and hydrated; drink plenty of water

Consider OTC mouth rinses for mouth ulcers (as directed)

If you smoke or vape, avoid until healed

See a clinician or dentist if it lasts longer than 2 weeks, is very large, recurs frequently, or you have fever, swollen glands, or trouble swallowing

Seek urgent care if you have severe pain, spreading sores, or you’re immunocompromised

Ask a clinician about prescription options (e.g., prescription mouth rinses or topical corticosteroids) if OTC treatments don’t help
