Park on a level surface and engage the parking brake
Turn on hazard lights
Put the vehicle in Park (or in gear for a manual transmission)
Locate the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench in the vehicle
If equipped, chock the wheels opposite the tire being changed
Loosen the lug nuts slightly (do not remove yet) while the tire is on the ground
Position the jack at the manufacturer-recommended jacking point
Raise the vehicle until the flat tire is fully off the ground
Remove the lug nuts and take off the flat tire
Mount the spare tire onto the hub, aligning the holes with the studs
Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star/cross pattern
Lower the vehicle until the spare tire contacts the ground
Tighten the lug nuts firmly in a star/cross pattern
Lower the vehicle fully and remove the jack
Fully tighten lug nuts again after a short drive (if recommended by the vehicle manual)
Stow the flat tire, tools, and spare according to the vehicle instructions
Check tire pressure on the spare as soon as possible and replace it when appropriate
