How To Do Oil Change?

Gather tools and supplies: correct oil type and viscosity, correct oil filter, new crush washer (if applicable), oil drain pan, socket/wrench for drain plug, oil filter wrench, funnel, gloves, rags/paper towels, jack and jack stands or ramps (if needed), wheel chocks

Warm the engine briefly to thin the oil (stop engine before starting work)

Park on level ground, set parking brake, and chock wheels

Open the hood and locate the oil fill cap

Lift the vehicle safely if required and support with jack stands or ramps

Place oil drain pan under the drain plug

Remove the oil fill cap

Remove the drain plug and let oil drain fully

Inspect the drain plug threads and replace the crush washer if applicable

Reinstall the drain plug and tighten to the specified torque

Position the oil drain pan under the oil filter area

Remove the old oil filter (turn counterclockwise)

Wipe the filter mounting surface clean

Apply a thin film of new oil to the new filter’s rubber gasket

Install the new oil filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten per filter instructions (do not overtighten)

Lower the vehicle if lifted

Add the correct amount of new oil using a funnel

Reinstall the oil fill cap

Start the engine and let it run for 30–60 seconds

Check for leaks at the drain plug and around the oil filter

Turn off the engine and wait a few minutes for oil to settle

Check the oil level with the dipstick and add oil as needed to reach the proper mark

Reset the oil life/service reminder if your vehicle has one

Dispose of used oil and the old filter at a recycling center or auto parts store

Record the date, mileage, oil type, viscosity, and filter part number
