Only clean the outer ear (ear canal entrance and folds)
Use a soft washcloth to gently wipe the outer ear
If using cotton swabs, keep them at the outer ear only—do not insert into the ear canal
If wax buildup is a problem, use OTC ear drops labeled for earwax removal (follow package directions)
Use warm mineral oil or olive oil only if you don’t have ear pain, drainage, a perforated eardrum, or a history of ear surgery
Warm the oil/ear drops by holding the container in your hand briefly before use
Lie on your side to apply ear drops, keep the position for the time directed on the label, then drain
After using ear drops, gently dry the outer ear with a towel
If water gets trapped after showering/swimming, tilt your head and gently pull the outer ear to help it drain
Consider drying with a low-heat hair dryer held at a distance, if needed
Do not insert cotton swabs, fingers, or other objects into the ear canal
Do not use ear candles
Do not flush your ears unless a clinician has advised it and you have no eardrum issues
Avoid ear drops if you have ear pain, drainage, suspected infection, a perforated eardrum, tubes, or recent ear surgery—seek medical advice instead
Stop if you feel significant pain, worsening hearing, dizziness, or new drainage and get medical care
