How To French Braid Your Own Hair?

Start with clean, dry, detangled hair

If needed, lightly dampen hair or apply a small amount of styling product for grip

Part your hair where you want the braid to begin

Take a small section at the top of your head and split it into three equal strands

Cross the right strand over the middle strand

Cross the left strand over the new middle strand

Add a small section of hair to the right strand before crossing it over the middle

Add a small section of hair to the left strand before crossing it over the middle

Continue alternating right-then-left crossings, each time adding hair from the corresponding side

Keep tension even and strands roughly the same size

When you reach the nape and all side hair is incorporated, braid the remaining hair using the basic three-strand pattern

Secure the end with an elastic band

Gently tug the braid to loosen and add volume, if desired

Smooth flyaways with a light mist of hairspray or a small amount of gel or pomade
