Blot up as much fresh urine as possible with paper towels or a clean cloth
Rinse the area lightly with cool water and blot again
Apply an enzyme-based pet urine cleaner to the affected area
Let the cleaner sit for the time listed on the product label
Blot the area dry with clean towels
Repeat the enzyme cleaner treatment if the smell remains
Sprinkle baking soda over the dry area and leave it for several hours
Vacuum up the baking soda thoroughly
Use a carpet-safe wet vacuum or extractor if the stain is deep
Replace the carpet pad if the urine has soaked through
Clean the surrounding area as well, not just the visible stain
Avoid using ammonia-based cleaners
Avoid steam cleaning before removing the urine odor
Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first
Air out the room and use fans to help the carpet dry
Repeat treatment until the odor is gone
