Apply a cold pack or ice wrapped in cloth for 10–20 minutes at a time during the first 24–48 hours
Rest and protect the bruised area
Elevate the bruised area above heart level when possible
Use a compression bandage if swelling is present, but not too tight
After 48 hours, use warm compresses for 10–20 minutes at a time
Take acetaminophen for pain if needed
Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen in the first 24 hours if possible
Keep the area clean if the skin is broken
Seek medical care if the bruise is very large, very painful, keeps growing, happens without injury, or does not improve after 2 weeks
Seek urgent care if you have trouble moving the area, severe swelling, numbness, head injury, or signs of infection
