One or both eyes look red or bloodshot
Eye(s) feel itchy, irritated, gritty, or burning
Watery eyes or increased tearing
Discharge that may be clear and watery, thick and yellow/green, or crusting on eyelids
Eyelids stuck together when waking up
Light sensitivity
Blurred or reduced vision that improves after blinking
Eyelids may be swollen
Symptoms often start in one eye and may spread to the other
Contact lens wearers may have more severe symptoms and should seek care promptly
Seek urgent care if you have severe eye pain, significant light sensitivity, vision changes that don’t clear, trouble moving the eye, a feeling of something stuck in the eye, chemical exposure, or you wear contact lenses and symptoms are moderate to severe
Seek same-day medical advice if symptoms are worsening, you have thick pus-like discharge, you have a newborn/infant affected, or symptoms last more than about 7–10 days
