Try lozenges or hard candy to soothe the throat
Elevate your head during sleep
Use over-the-counter cough suppressants if appropriate (follow label directions)
Use over-the-counter expectorants if mucus is present (follow label directions)
Use over-the-counter antihistamines if allergies are suspected (follow label directions)
Consider an over-the-counter pain/fever reducer if you have throat discomfort or fever (follow label directions)
If you have reflux symptoms, avoid late meals, reduce trigger foods, and consider an OTC acid reducer (follow label directions)
Seek medical care urgently if you have trouble breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, severe wheezing, bluish lips, or high fever
Seek medical care if cough lasts more than 3 weeks, is getting worse, or you have recurrent coughing
Contact a clinician if you’re pregnant, have chronic lung/heart disease, are immunocompromised, or for children with persistent cough
