Locate the smoke alarm on the ceiling or wall
Press and hold the test button for 5–10 seconds
If the alarm has a silence button, press it once to silence temporarily
If it has a hush/quiet mode, activate it again if it re-triggers
For battery-powered alarms, remove the battery from the unit
For hardwired alarms with battery backup, switch off the home’s breaker for that alarm circuit, then remove the backup battery
After silencing, confirm the alarm is no longer sounding
If needed, disconnect the alarm from wiring (only after turning off power at the breaker) and remove it from the mounting bracket
If the alarm is chirping due to low battery, replace the battery instead of disconnecting permanently
If smoke or cooking fumes are present, ventilate the area (open windows/doors, use exhaust fans) and keep the alarm powered until the air clears
