Rinse the avocado seed and remove any remaining fruit
Locate the seed’s top (narrow end) and bottom (wider end)
Insert 3–4 toothpicks around the seed’s middle, evenly spaced, leaving the bottom half exposed
Fill a glass or jar with water and set the seed so the bottom half is submerged and the toothpicks rest on the rim
Place the jar in a warm, bright spot with indirect sunlight
Change the water every few days to keep it fresh
Wait for roots to grow from the bottom and a shoot to emerge from the top
Once roots are several inches long and the shoot reaches a few inches, prepare a pot with drainage holes
Fill a pot with well-draining potting mix (or a mix of potting soil and compost)
Plant the seed with the bottom portion in soil, keeping the top portion exposed
Water thoroughly until excess drains out
Keep soil lightly moist but not soggy
Provide bright light and warmth; rotate the pot regularly for even growth
When the plant has a few sets of leaves, trim back the top to encourage branching if desired
Continue to repot as the plant grows, using larger containers with drainage
