Wash the asparagus and trim off the tough woody ends
Heat a skillet over medium heat
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of oil or butter
Place the asparagus in the skillet in a single layer
Season with salt and pepper
Cook for 5 to 8 minutes, turning occasionally
Add garlic, lemon juice, or other seasonings if desired
Cook until the asparagus is tender and lightly browned
Remove from the stove and serve immediately
