Wash the chard thoroughly
Trim off the tough stems
Separate the stems from the leaves
Chop the stems into small pieces
Chop the leaves into strips
Heat olive oil or butter in a pan
Add garlic or onion if desired
Cook the stems first for a few minutes
Add the leaves and cook until wilted
Season with salt and pepper
Add lemon juice or vinegar if desired
Serve hot as a side dish or mix into other dishes
