Test the pool water with a reliable test kit
Check the total alkalinity reading
If alkalinity is low, add sodium bicarbonate
If alkalinity is high, add muriatic acid or dry acid
Add chemicals in small doses
Dissolve chemicals in a bucket of pool water if required by the product label
Broadcast the solution evenly around the pool
Run the pump and circulate the water
Wait several hours before retesting
Retest total alkalinity after circulation
Repeat small adjustments until the target range is reached
Keep pH in range while adjusting alkalinity
