How to Build a Firepit?

Check local building codes, HOA rules, and burn restrictions

Choose a safe location away from structures, trees, fences, and overhanging branches

Mark the firepit size and shape on the ground

Call utility locating services before digging

Remove grass, roots, and debris from the marked area

Dig the base to a level depth

Add and compact a layer of gravel for drainage

Set the first ring of fireproof blocks or fire bricks in a level circle

Stack additional blocks in staggered layers

Use construction adhesive rated for high heat if appropriate for the materials

Keep the inner surface lined with fire bricks if needed

Check that the ring is level and stable after each layer

Leave drainage gaps if required by the design

Install a metal fire ring insert if desired

Fill any outer gaps with gravel or sand

Clear the surrounding area of flammable materials

Place seating and tools at a safe distance

Test the firepit with a small fire first

Keep water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby

Maintain the firepit by removing ash and checking for cracks regularly
