Choose a safe location away from structures, trees, fences, and overhanging branches
Mark the firepit size and shape on the ground
Call utility locating services before digging
Remove grass, roots, and debris from the marked area
Dig the base to a level depth
Add and compact a layer of gravel for drainage
Set the first ring of fireproof blocks or fire bricks in a level circle
Stack additional blocks in staggered layers
Use construction adhesive rated for high heat if appropriate for the materials
Keep the inner surface lined with fire bricks if needed
Check that the ring is level and stable after each layer
Leave drainage gaps if required by the design
Install a metal fire ring insert if desired
Fill any outer gaps with gravel or sand
Clear the surrounding area of flammable materials
Place seating and tools at a safe distance
Test the firepit with a small fire first
Keep water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby
Maintain the firepit by removing ash and checking for cracks regularly
