Keep the stitches clean and dry
Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for wound care
Wash your hands before touching the area
Gently clean the wound only as directed
Change dressings as instructed
Avoid soaking the area in baths, pools, or hot tubs unless approved
Protect the stitches from rubbing or pulling
Do not pick at scabs or stitches
Avoid strenuous activity that could strain the wound
Watch for signs of infection such as redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or worsening pain
Seek medical care if the wound opens, bleeds heavily, or the stitches come out early
Take prescribed medications as directed
Return for stitch removal if instructed
Keep follow-up appointments
