How to Change a Spare Tire?

Park on a flat, safe surface away from traffic

Turn on hazard lights

Apply the parking brake

Put the vehicle in park or in gear

Place wheel wedges or blocks behind the opposite tires

Remove the spare tire, jack, and lug wrench from the vehicle

Remove the wheel cover or hubcap if needed

Slightly loosen the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground

Position the jack under the vehicle’s designated jacking point

Raise the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground

Remove the lug nuts completely

Take off the flat tire

Mount the spare tire onto the wheel bolts or hub

Hand-tighten the lug nuts

Lower the vehicle until the spare tire touches the ground

Tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern

Lower the vehicle fully

Tighten the lug nuts again as much as possible

Reinstall the hubcap if applicable

Put the flat tire, jack, and tools back in the vehicle

Check the spare tire pressure as soon as possible

Drive carefully and avoid high speeds if using a temporary spare

Have the flat tire repaired or replaced promptly
