Park on a level surface and turn on hazard lights
Set the parking brake
Put the vehicle in Park (or in gear for a manual)
Turn on the engine off
Locate the spare tire, jack, lug wrench, and wheel chocks
If possible, place wheel chocks on the opposite side of the flat tire
Loosen the lug nuts slightly (do not remove) while the tire is still on the ground
Position the jack at the manufacturer-recommended jack point near the flat tire
Jack up the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground
Remove the lug nuts and set them aside
Remove the flat tire and place it out of the way
Mount the spare tire onto the wheel hub
Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star/cross pattern
Lower the vehicle until the spare tire contacts the ground
Tighten the lug nuts firmly in a star/cross pattern
Fully lower the jack and remove it from under the vehicle
Check that the spare tire is seated properly and lug nuts are secure
Stow the flat tire, jack, and tools
Close the hood and check that hazard lights are still on
Drive cautiously and avoid high speeds; replace the spare with a proper tire as soon as possible
Recheck lug nut tightness after a short distance (and again after a few miles)
