How To Change Oil?

Gather supplies: correct engine oil, correct oil filter, new oil drain plug washer/gasket (if applicable), oil filter wrench (if needed), funnel, gloves, drain pan, shop towels/rags, and jack stands/ramps or a lift (if needed)

Park on a level surface and set the parking brake

Warm the engine briefly, then shut off

Locate the oil fill cap on top of the engine

Locate the oil drain plug on the oil pan

Place a drain pan under the drain plug

Remove the oil fill cap

Remove the drain plug using the correct socket/wrench

Allow oil to fully drain

Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer/gasket if required; tighten to the specified torque

Remove the old oil filter

Apply a thin film of new oil to the new filter’s gasket

Install the new oil filter by hand until the gasket contacts, then tighten per filter instructions (do not overtighten)

Add new oil through the fill opening using the correct quantity from the owner’s manual

Reinstall the oil fill cap

Start the engine for 30–60 seconds

Shut off the engine and check for leaks at the drain plug and oil filter

Wait a few minutes, then check the oil level with the dipstick

Add oil in small increments until the level is correct

Clean up spills and dispose of used oil and the old filter properly

Reset the oil life reminder/service indicator (if equipped)
