Park on a level surface and let the engine cool
Gather the correct oil filter, oil, wrench, drain pan, and rags
Raise the vehicle if needed and secure it with jack stands
Place a drain pan under the oil filter area
Remove the old oil filter carefully
Check that the old filter gasket is not stuck on the engine
Lightly oil the gasket on the new filter
Install the new filter by hand until the gasket contacts the surface
Tighten the filter according to the filter instructions
Refill the engine with the correct amount of oil
Start the engine and check for leaks
Shut off the engine and recheck the oil level
Dispose of the old oil filter properly
