Turn off the water supply to the toilet
Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl
Sponge out any remaining water
Disconnect the water supply line
Remove the tank lid and set it aside safely
Unscrew the bolts securing the toilet to the floor
Rock the toilet gently to break the wax seal
Lift the toilet straight up and remove it
Scrape off the old wax ring from the flange
Inspect the flange and repair if needed
Install a new wax ring or seal
Set the new toilet in place over the flange
Press down evenly to seat the toilet
Secure the toilet with new bolts
Reconnect the water supply line
Turn the water supply back on
Check for leaks
Flush several times to confirm proper operation
Caulk around the base if desired, leaving a gap at the back
Reinstall the tank lid
