Ensure good lighting
Ask the person to look straight ahead
Pull down the lower eyelid and inspect the conjunctiva
Check the inside of the lower lip and oral mucosa
Examine the palms, nail beds, and fingertips
Compare skin color with the surrounding areas
Look for generalized paleness of the face and body
Check for pallor in the tongue and gums
Assess both hands and both feet for symmetry
Compare with the person’s usual skin tone if known
