Wash your hands first

Keep the area clean and dry
If there is dried discharge, soften it with warm water before wiping
Avoid using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or harsh soaps unless a doctor says to
If the umbilical cord stump is still present, follow your pediatrician’s care instructions
Contact a doctor if there is redness, swelling, foul smell, pus, bleeding, or fever
